Sherilyn Brodersen is the Ethical Sourcing Manager for the Americas region for Cadbury plc, with responsibility for ensuring that the business maintains ethical sourcing standards throughout the supply chain and for developing sustainable agriculture programmes for key raw materials. Sherilyn has degrees in International Business and marketing,?and Modern Foreign Languages & Latin American Studies. She joined Cadbury in 2001, working in communications, and then joined the global procurement team the following year, managing purchasing for packaging and indirects & promotional items. In 2006 she took the position of Ethical Sourcing & Sustainability Manager for the Americas. Sherilyn also helped to start and continues to work on Cadbury's Supplier Diversity Program and is a member of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility and 'Purple Goes Green' teams. Sherilyn is an active member of industry groups focused on sustainability and ethical trade practices. Prior to Cadbury, Sherilyn worked in Peru with a mission organization focused on working with children in impoverished areas, and upon returning to the US, co-founded a non-profit, Peruvian Classics, Inc, to continue to raise awareness and revenue for the plight of street children in Peru and support economic develop and growth through working with local Peruvian artisans.

Jay Celorie is the global program manager for supply chain energy, directing programs to increase energy efficiency in the supply chain and to work with our suppliers to reduce the overall carbon footprint. Jay is a part of the Global Social and Environmental Responsibility (SER) Operations team in Hewlett Packard, driving programs to implement SER policy into HP’s products and supply chain, from design and materials through manufacturing, distribution, and end-of-life.

Jay joined HP in 1998. Prior to his work at HP, he was a Senior Project Manager at CH2M HILL where he directed multi-million dollar environmental remediation projects.

Jay holds a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University. Jay is also a registered professional engineer.

Paul Comey is Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. His responsibilities include assuring the company’s sites are in environmental compliance with all local, state and federal laws, reducing the environmental impact of the company’s operations, and contributing to the management of the company’s environmental, financial and social bottom lines.

Paul has a vision of accelerating Green Mountain Coffee’s leadership in the environmental arena by using climate change as a competitive advantage. His initial efforts to map the company’s environmental footprint have resulted in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. He sees the company’s commitment to GHG reduction and mitigation as essential to the company’s core belief that business can be a change agent in the world. Paul has initiated programs and processes that exhibit his belief that environmental practices are typically best business practices. His focus on the four R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover) through the use of EMS (Environmental Management System) has diverted much of the waste stream resulting in a financial revenue stream. Paul shares the company’s environmental best practices through public speaking engagements and by testifying before state and federal agencies to influence environmental policies.

Bob also led the development of PwC’s Multinational Transaction Service Strategy over the past years allowing him to build a solid working relationship with the global leaders of PwC’s Transaction Services business.

Bob’s deal experience includes over 300 transactions globally representing both buyers and sellers. Significant accomplishments include Burnham’s acquisition of Corporate Express voted best transaction by Business Week in 2000 and the acquisition of Maytag by Whirlpool in 2005.

Bill Flanagan leads the Ecoassessment Center of Excellence for the General Electric Company and is based at GE Global Research in upstate New York. Bill’s team offers comprehensive technical expertise in life cycle assessment, carbon footprinting, human health and environmental risk assessment. He also works closely with GE’s Corporate Environmental Programs team on the development of programs and policy in these areas.

Bill graduated from Virginia Tech in 1985 and received a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1991. He spent the first 10 years of his career focused on various aspects of environmental technology including site remediation, air and water treatment, and pollution prevention. He spent the next six or so years managing GE’s combinatorial chemistry lab, a team responsible for developing and applying high throughput screening for materials development. In 2007 he returned to his roots to lead the Ecoassessment Center of Excellence.

W. Richard Gartman is the Product Stewardship Manager for Texas Instruments’ Education Technology business. In this position he over sees Product Safety, Environmental and Regulatory compliance related to Education Technology products. This position requires assessment of industry trends and regulations, developing actions plans and advising product teams for successful implementation to ensure uninterrupted delivery of product.

Mr. Gartman is a board Certified Safety Professional. He holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Ethics degree from St. Edwards University’s in Austin, Texas and an undergraduate degree is in General Engineering from San Jose State University. He holds an American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) certificate in Corporate Safety Management and a Process Safety Management certificate from University of Southern California. He has fifteen plus years as a safety professional and as many years in semiconductor manufacturing and equipment design.

Mr. Gartman has been a participant in the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International’s (SEMI) standards organization and has been the primary author and/or contributor to numerous safety guidelines, technical papers and workshops since 1986. Mr. Gartman is a retired member of the SEMI International Standard Committee, and has held multiple leadership positions in the SEMI Standards North America Region. Mr. Mr. Gartman has received numerous awards from SEMI for his contribution and leadership to the standards program. Gartman is also a retired board member of Keep Austin Beautiful and of several youth sports organizations.

Richard Goode is the Senior Director of Sustainability at Alcatel-Lucent. In this role Rich leads the company’s efforts in setting CO2 emissions targets, and creating and implementing sustainability programs across all Alcatel-Lucent operations. In addition, Rich integrates sustainability issues into the planning, business processes and decision making functions of the company, challenging established ways of doing things to build lasting business value.

Rich has lectured on climate change and sustainability issues at MIT Sloan School of Management, Boston University, and the University of Bridgeport. Rich is also the founder of the Boston-area Sustainability Group.

Rich holds a B.S. in strategic management from the University of Massachusetts, an M.B.A., with distinction, from Nichols College and is a graduate of Presidio School of Management’s Executive Program in Sustainable Management.

Jim Gowen holds the complementary roles of vice president of Supply Chain Operations and Chief Sustainability Officer for Verizon, a dual responsibility he was appointed to in September 2009.

As Verizon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Gowen is responsible for setting the direction of the company’s sustainable growth strategies and for reducing its carbon footprint. With a focus on working with vendors and business partners to drive efficiency into the supply chain, he also oversees initiatives being implemented across Verizon including fuel and energy reduction, paper suppression, waste reduction and recycling, and management of end-of-life-cycle material recovery.

In his supply chain role, Gowen leads centralized operations and the global customer premises equipment program with responsibility for more than $2.5 billion in annual through-put and half a billion dollars in annual inventory. He oversees Verizon’s regional distribution centers, purchasing and materials management, investment recovery, international supply chain and centralized fleet operations.

Previously, Gowen was executive director of supply chain’s centralized operations team as well as the lead architect of the company’s supply chain strategy. Gowen led the strategic shift from a fixed to a variable inventory business model, and he maintains an ongoing focus on continual improvement to meet the changing needs of an evolving and increasingly competitive Telecommunications industry.

Gowen has held various positions with increasing levels of responsibility including corporate sourcing, outsourcing services, supply chain systems, and operations. He led the implementation of Verizon’s eProcurement effort, and the standardization of Verizon’s supply chain systems.

Gowen earned his master’s degree in business administration from Long Island University and his bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College. He is located at Verizon Center in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

James Hagan is Vice President, Sustainability and Environment, GlaxoSmithKline. Previously, he held the position of Vice President, Corporate Environment, Health and Safety in GlaxoSmithKline from 2001 to 2009. Dr. Hagan's responsibilities cover the full range of environmental sustainability programmes worldwide including the setting of the direction for the company and the provision of support.

Dr. Hagan joined SmithKline Beckman in 1983 as Manager of Corporate Environmental Services and held a series of EHS management positions until 1994 when he was named SmithKline Beecham’s Vice President/Director of Corporate Environment and Safety.

Prior to joining SmithKline Beecham, he worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the Wastewater, Hazardous Waste and Superfund programs as well as two years as the Deputy Administrator of the Water and Wastewater Management Administration for the District of Columbia. Prior to his government service, he worked in the chemical industry in environmental research, development, design and construction.

Jim holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and two Masters of Science qualifications in Environmental Health Engineering and Management Sciences. His BS degree is in Chemical Engineering. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Diplomat of Environmental Engineering and a Certified Quality Manager. He is active in EHS issues in various associations and is a member of EHS professional organisations.

Connie Hensler is Director of Corporate Life Cycle Assessment Programs for Interface, Inc. Interface is the world leader in modular carpet, and is recognized as a leader in the movement of the industrial community toward environmentally sustainability.

Hensler joined Interface in 1993 as Technical Director at one of Interface’s manufacturing plants and progressed through Director of Manufacturing there and into corporate research and development. As Director of Sustainable Research she directed development of new chemistries and process modifications to transition the company to more sustainable products and processes. Currently as Director of Corporate Life Cycle Assessment Programs, she manages the use of LCA at Interface towards the company’s ultimate goal of sustainability. She holds multiple US and international patents related to her work.

She holds a Masters of Science degree in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from Georgia State University and is a certified Life Cycle Assessment Professional (LCACP).

Lee Kindberg was appointed Director, Environment for Maersk North America in April, 2006. Prior to this appointment she was General Manager, Environment and Acting Director of Compliance. Lee is responsible for environmental policies and programs for all Maersk businesses in North America. She also takes a leadership role in ensuring Maersk Inc. and all business units operate in compliance with federal and state HS&E regulations, and in implementing safety and environmental management systems. She is very active in the Clean Cargo Working Group, and global group dedicated to assessing and improving the environmental impact of shipping, and in ensuring responsible corporate citizenship.

Lee joined Maersk Inc. from the Institute for Defense Analyses. She has an extensive background in the chemical industry, where she was Director of Government Relations & Environmental Science for the Hoechst Celanese (HCC) Fibers & Specialty Chemicals Groups. She has managed environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, medical and security for a major chemical manufacturing facility. She was active in national and state groups including ASTM, the Chemical Manufacturers Association, and the AIChE Center for Waste Reduction Technologies, and has served on the Boards of state chemical and industrial associations.

Her public service includes 4 years as an elected member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education (130,000 students, 17,000 employees). She served as one of 2 industry representatives on the North Carolina General Assembly Study Commission on the Future of the Electric Industry, and served on the North Carolina Pollution Prevention Advisory Committee (Capacity Committee).

Chris Librie is the Director of Global Sustainability. In this role, he provides global leadership to facilitate the development and implementation of environmental and safety policies, strategies and actions.

Chris directs the company’s efforts to continually reduce its environmental footprint through energy efficiencies and renewable energy sources. Chris leads programs that advance social progress throughout the world, particularly in Base of the Pyramid communities. He oversees the company’s efforts to select earth-responsible raw materials through its patented and award-winning Greenlist™ process. Chris also manages the company’s initiatives to help prevent and combat insect-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.

Chris has more than 20 years of marketing and general management experience with SC Johnson and Unilever. He previously served as Managing Director of Marketing – Europe, in which he was responsible for the marketing of SC Johnson’s $1,500MM business in Europe, Australia and Japan. Prior to this role, Chris was Director of Global Brand Equity.

Chris has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Kim Marotta is the Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at MillerCoors. In role, Ms. Marotta is responsible for implementing MillerCoors sustainable development strategy and managing MillerCoors alcohol responsibility initiatives. She works closely with both parent organizations to drive performance in these key areas.

Ms. Marotta completed her undergraduate work at Marquette University and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. Prior to joining MillerCoors in 2004, Ms. Marotta practiced law for more than 13 years, specializing in criminal defense. She formerly served as an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School, was voted in a Milwaukee Magazine survey as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in the city and was recognized by The Business Journal as one of the top “40 Under 40” leaders in the community.

Ms. Marotta is a member of several boards, including Milwaukee World Festivals, US Bank Championship, Visit Milwaukee, Public Policy Forum, Milwaukee Ballet and Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Kevin sits on the Corporate Advisory Council of the American Red Cross and is a member of the Global Leadership Network of AccountAbility and the CRO Association’s Board of Governors where he chairs the committee for professional development. From 2007-2009 he was founding chairperson of the Energy and Environment Committee of the British American Business Association in Washington DC. Kevin was a recipient of the 2009 PR News; CSR Executive of the Year Award.

Doug Palmer is the Senior Director of Quality and Environmental Strategy for the Home and Networks Mobility business – the cable television and cellular infrastructure unit within Motorola.

In his Environmental Strategy role, Palmer is responsible for developing and executing environmental sustainability plans that enable customers, consumers, and the business to become greener by decreasing the environmental footprint of products, services, and operations. Current focus areas include energy, carbon footprint, substances of concern, packaging, and recycling initiatives. Previously, Palmer led a global effort to convert product portfolios to become EU RoHS compliant.

In his Quality role, Palmer is responsible for driving down costs of poor quality – unwanted expenditures that erode business margins and have root causes from process issues in core business processes. Palmer recently led teams to achieve substantial cost savings from reductions in air freight charges, excess and obsolete inventories, and warranty costs.

Palmer has held various positions with increasing levels of responsibility, including supply chain operations, customer program management office, and engineering management. Palmer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University and is the recipient of several customer, business, and patent awards.

David holds a Masters degree in Energy and Environmental Analysis from Boston University and a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Director Scott took over leadership of the nation’s oldest state environmental agency on the 35th anniversary date of the Illinois EPA’s start on July 1, 1970. He is committed to maintaining and enhancing the Agency’s key role in protecting our air, land and water making government more accountable and accessible to citizens and the regulated community, including local governments and business.
Director Scott chaired the Governor’s Climate Change Advisory Committee, which made recommendations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Illinois, and serves on the Midwestern Governors’ Association panel developing a regional cap-and-trade system. He also served two years as Chair of the Air Committee for Environmental Council of the States (ECOS).

David Spitzley - Conference Speaker   David Spitzley

Mr. Spitzley has more than fourteen years of experience in environmental and sustainability analysis. His experience includes topics such as life cycle assessment, organizational environmental strategy, sustainable facility design, component environmental analysis and sustainable product design strategy. He joined the Global Sustainability team at Kimberly-Clark as a product sustainability manager in 2006. In this role, he provides oversight and guidance for activities in life cycle assessment, product environmental improvement, carbon footprints and related fields. Prior to joining K-C, he directed graduate students, managed research activities and conducted life cycle research at the University of Michigan Center for Sustainable Systems. As the Senior Research Associate at CSS, he contributed to methods development in life cycle optimization and life cycle energy analysis.

Previously, Mr. Spitzley served as a senior consultant in life cycle management and automotive technology at Battelle Memorial Institute. While at Battelle, he advised the Ford Motor Company on the environmental redesign of the historic Rouge complex and helped guide life cycle assessment decision making procedures at General Motors. Mr. Spitzley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and has been actively involved in societies and associations focused on sustainability. He is currently serving as chair of the Methodology Working Group for the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Initiative and as a member of the steering committee for the Sustainability Consortium. He is the author of fourteen technical papers on sustainability and environmental design as well as two textbook chapters addressing life cycle assessment.

Charlene leads sustainability communications for BASF in North America. Prior to this she led a company-wide team pursuing opportunities for sustainable packaging technologies. She previously managed BASF’s North American Eco-efficiency Analysis program, facilitating the integration of sustainable development into the businesses. She is a Board Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and acted as the Inaugural Chair for AIChE’s Center for Sustainable Technology Practices. She started her career in engineering in 1992 with a B.S.Ch.E. from Drexel University.

Ken in a Certified Safety Professional and holds the designation of Associate in Risk Management. He brings over 25 years of safety and risk management experience in manufacturing and insurance industries. For the past 16 years, Ken has worked for Kraft Foods in roles of Division Safety Manager, Area Director, Program Director and his current role of Director of Safety and Environmental for North America. Based outside of Chicago, he is responsible for the development of the safety and environmental processes that cover over 40,000 employees in 200 locations.

Prior to Kraft, Ken worked for the Hershey Chocolate Division of Hershey Foods as Plant and Division Safety Manager in Hershey, PA. He started his career as a Loss Control Specialist with Sentry Insurance.
